Bainbridge, Georgia - A quiet community with a sense of serenity, has been shaken by a tragic incident that unfolded on Saturday evening. Officials are currently investigating a disturbing murder-suicide case that has left the community grappling with shock and sorrow. The incident, which occurred in the 1100 block of Stewart Avenue, involved a couple, Melissa and Jody Poitevient, whose lives took a devastating turn.

According to Bainbridge Public Safety Police Chief Redell Walton, the dreadful event transpired around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Police responded to a domestic call and upon arrival, discovered a harrowing scene. Two children, a 15-year-old and a 9-year-old, were present at the residence when law enforcement reached the location.

The individuals at the center of this tragedy have been identified as Melissa Poitevient and Jody Poitevient two educators from Decatur County. It is reported that Jody, in a shocking turn of events, took the life of his wife of 18 years, shooting her in the chest, before turning the gun on himself. Police found Jody with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, and Melissa, though gravely injured, was still responsive when authorities arrived.

The cause of this tragedy still under investigation.

Melissa was swiftly attended to by emergency responders and transported to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. However, due to the severity of her injuries, she was later life-flighted to a Tallahassee hospital. Tragically, despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Melissa succumbed to her injuries and passed away.

The Bainbridge community, known for its close-knit nature, is now grappling with the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident. The presence of children at the scene adds an extra layer of sorrow to the already devastating circumstances. The psychological impact on the young witnesses and the community as a whole cannot be understated. “It’s a tragedy in every sense. It’s unfortunate that these kids are going to have to grow up without their parents,” Walton said.

Some people in the community are reflecting on the loss of two well-known educators. Some took to Facebook to remember Melissa, saying she was an amazing teacher who was an advocate for special needs students like her own kids, who are autistic. They attend Decatur County Schools.

Melissa Jean Thrower- Poitevient, 36, was a graduate of Bainbridge High School, Class of 2005, and earned two master’s degrees, one being from Valdosta State University. Her education goals were based on a yearning to understand and provide for her children. Melissa worked as an associate supervisor for ABA Essentials and previously at Spring Creek Charter Academy.

“On behalf of the entire Decatur County School System, our hearts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time and we stand ready to support the students that have been impacted during this tragedy,” Boyd English, superintendent for Decatur County Schools, said.

Bainbridge Public Safety is actively investigating the details surrounding this tragedy. The motive behind the murder-suicide, as well as any potential signs or warnings, will be scrutinized in an effort to understand the factors that led to this devastating outcome. Chief Walton emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to provide the community with answers and closure.

As the Bainbridge community mourns the loss of Melissa Poitevient and comes to terms with the shocking nature of this murder-suicide, the investigation continues to unfold. The tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of mental health awareness and support systems within communities. In the face of such heartbreaking events, it is crucial for neighbors, friends, and family to come together to provide comfort and assistance to those affected by this profound loss.

Former Mayor Under Scrutiny For Asking For Ride

In December 2024, a video surfaced showing former Watertown Mayor Jeffrey Smith receiving a ride home in a police patrol car after a night of holiday drinking. The incident has sparked controversy, with City Councilman Cliff Olney accusing Smith of receiving "preferential treatment" from the Watertown Police Department.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media this week, depicts Smith interacting with officers before being escorted into the patrol car. Councilman Olney contends that such actions undermine public trust and suggest a double standard in law enforcement practices.

In response, Smith has downplayed the incident, stating, "It's not a big deal, I drive on a suspended registration too!" This remark has further fueled the debate, with critics arguing that it reflects a dismissive attitude toward legal obligations and public safety.

The Watertown Police Department has yet to issue an official statement regarding the matter. As discussions continue, the incident ...
